praline cake recipe

Praline cake is the kind of dessert that turns simple ingredients into something wonderfully indulgent. A soft, tender cake base is topped with a rich mixture of brown sugar, butter and crunchy pecans, then baked again until the topping becomes beautifully caramelised. The result is a lovely contrast of fluffy cake, crisp nuts and a buttery, toffee-like finish in every bite. This praline cake recipe is also surprisingly straightforward, making it a great choice for family gatherings, weekend baking or festive celebrations. You do not need complicated decorating skills either. Once the praline topping goes on, the oven does most of the work, leaving you with an inviting homemade cake ready to slice and enjoy.

  • Cuisine: American
  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Bake Time: 35–40 minutes
  • Cooling Time: 25 minutes
  • Total Time: Around 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Servings: 12

Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1 box yellow cake mix, about 430 g
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 large eggs
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil

For the Praline Topping

  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup pecans, roughly chopped
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Baking Steps

Prepare the oven and tin

Preheat the oven to 175°C. Lightly grease a 9 × 13-inch baking tin with butter or cooking spray so the cake releases easily after baking.

Prepare the cake batter

Add the cake mix, water, three eggs and vegetable oil to a large mixing bowl. Beat on low speed until the ingredients come together.

Beat until smooth

Increase the mixer to medium speed and beat the batter for about 2 minutes. The mixture should look smooth and evenly combined.

Pour into the baking tin

Transfer the batter to the prepared tin. Spread it evenly so the cake rises at roughly the same height throughout.

Bake the cake

Place the tin in the preheated oven and bake for around 23 to 28 minutes. Insert a toothpick into the centre. If it comes out clean or with a few soft crumbs, the cake is ready.

Allow the cake to cool

Place the baking tin on a wire rack and leave the cake to cool for about 25 minutes. Meanwhile, increase the oven temperature to 200°C.

Make the praline mixture

Place the brown sugar, butter, remaining egg and flour in a saucepan. Cook over low heat while stirring until the mixture begins to thicken, which should take around 3 minutes.

Spread the praline topping

Spoon the warm praline mixture over the cake. Carefully spread it across the surface, taking it towards the edges so every slice gets some topping.

Caramelise the topping

Return the cake to the oven and bake for another 8 to 10 minutes. The topping should become slightly caramelised and develop a rich, glossy finish.

Cool before slicing

Take the cake out of the oven and allow it to cool slightly. Slice it into squares and serve either slightly warm or at room temperature.

What Makes Praline Cake Special?

The praline topping is what sets this dessert apart from an ordinary cake. Traditional praline-style flavours combine sugar with nuts, creating a rich mixture with caramel-like notes and a delicate crunch. In this recipe, brown sugar and butter melt together before you add chopped pecans.

Once you spread this mixture over the baked cake and return it to the oven, the sugar caramelises further. This gives the surface a slightly crisp finish while the cake underneath remains soft. The combination means every bite offers more than one texture. You get tender cake, buttery caramel notes and crunchy pecans together. Better still, the topping serves as the finishing touch, so you don’t need to prepare a separate layer of frosting.

Tips for Making the Best Praline Cake

Do not overbake the cake: Check it towards the lower end of the recommended baking time. Overbaking can make the base dry.

Use fresh pecans: Fresh nuts give the praline topping a cleaner flavour and better crunch. You can also toast them lightly before chopping for a deeper nutty taste.

Keep the heat low for the topping: Brown sugar and butter can burn quickly. Cook the praline mixture gently, stirring regularly as it thickens.

Spread the topping while warm: The mixture becomes thicker as it cools. Adding it to the cake straight after cooking makes it much easier to spread.

Give the cake time to settle: Although praline cake tastes wonderful slightly warm, letting it rest briefly makes slicing easier.

That’s your sign to stop scrolling and start baking. This praline cake brings soft crumb, buttery crunch and major dessert energy without making things complicated. One bake later, and your kitchen might just become the favourite place in the house.
