Baking cakes in the oven or microwave is popular. But, if you do not have access to any of these, then you can bake a cake on a gas stove. The resulting cake is similar to the oven or microwave baked cake, just more tender and soft to eat.
Let’s see how to bake cake on Gas?
Step 1: Prepare the cake batter. You can use a ready-made cake mix or use these ingredients.
- All-purpose flour, eggs (if vegetarian, skip it), baking powder, baking soda, sugar, milk, vanilla extract, cooking oil. Cocoa powder if baking a chocolate cake. Mix the dry ingredients with the wet until you get the desired consistency.
Step 2: Prepare the cake pans. Coat the cake pans (depending upon the cakes you wish to bake; one, two, three) with butter at the bottom and sides, then dust some all-purpose flour. Shake and jiggle the pans so that the sides are also coated with flour. You can either line the pan with parchment paper or choose to leave it.
Step 3: Carefully pour the batter into the prepared cake pan. Using a spatula scrape every bit of the batter into the pan. If you are baking multiple cakes, evenly distribute the cake batter into the tins. Gently shake the pan side to side to spread the batter evenly.
- Pro Tip: Gently tap the cake pan with batter against the slab to settle any air bubbles.
Step 4: Preparing the cooking pot. You would need a pot and a steamer basket or cooking dish on top of it. The basket or the dish has to sit on top of the pot, so the bottom has to be flat.
Step 5: Place the pot on the gas, pour water into the pot and then set on top of the pot the dish or steamer basket. Add or pour out water as desired. Make sure the water doesn’t bubble out of the pot into the steamer.
Step 6: Cover the base of the basket/dish with dried beans, pebbles or place a cooking stand. It is to create a buffer between the dish and the cake pan.
Step 7: Cover the pot with a lid and let it heat for 5 minutes on high flame. It is similar to preheating the oven.
- Preheating is important for baking the cake evenly.
Step 8: Place the cake pan on top of the dried beans, stand or pebbles carefully. The cake pan should not touch the bottom as it will be too hot and overbaked.
Step 9: Take a parchment paper slightly bigger than the pot lid. Place the paper first, and then cover the pot with the lid.
Step 10: Bake the cake on a medium flame for 30-45 minutes or until the toothpick comes out clean. In between, you can rotate the cake pan for even baking but do not let the heat to escape too much. Keep an eye on the cake. Some require more time while others less.
Step 11: Once baked, take out the cake pan from the pot carefully. Let it cool completely. Peel the parchment paper, flip the cake back over. Cut and serve.
If you do not have a pot or a cooking dish, don’t worry. Here’s how you can make cake on gas with a cooker or Kadai.
